Skagway Rockslide

Skagway, AK

The historic town of Skagway, Alaska, serves as a significant hub for the seasonal cruise line tourism industry. When a rockslide damaged sections of the railway line and one of the primary docks, the town officials turned to ElevateUAS to assess the extent of this immediate threat, which endangered both the safety and economic stability of the community.

To address the situation, we employed LiDAR technology in conjunction with photogrammetry mapping to generate detailed data deliverables aimed at assessing and monitoring the affected slide areas. During our data collection flights, another rockslide occurred. Fortunately, due to the stringent safety protocols that had been put in place, there were no injuries. Having just completed the LiDAR data collection prior to this rockslide, we were in a position to immediately scan and map the impacted area. This enabled us to provide a comprehensive change analysis report within 24 hours of the event.
In addition to fulfilling the client’s initial data requirements, we demonstrated our ability to adapt to the emergency situation by delivering a prompt and detailed analysis of the area to the clients.
